Planet-friendly food, a guy that walks on air & office logistics

How to

How to add ‘lekker local’ flavour to an event menu

Event menus have become as predictable as wedding speeches: chicken, beef, creamed spinach for the vegetarians, rinse, repeat…

But we’re dreaming of menus that are mouth-watering AND contain cultural zing.

South Africa is abundant with delicious, eco-friendly ingredients, like Bambara groundnuts (legumes so tough they laugh in the face of drought) and cowpea, a protein-packed powerhouse.

What about something tart? The wild plum has more antioxidants than a superfood aisle and tastes like a zesty party in your mouth. And if you’re feeling nostalgic, add some num-nums or sour plums for a hyper-local angle.

Indigenous fruits and vegetables pack a punch, thrive in our climate, and don’t need carbon-heavy transport to make it to the kitchen. But here’s the catch: Make sure these ingredients are celebrated, not appropriated. Collaborate with local suppliers, credit traditional uses, and honour the relevant roots. (See what we did there?)

If your event menu isn’t rocking some indigenous foods, is it even up to trend?

Tim Slab is slacking – and not in a lazy way
Imagine walking on a line that’s barely wider than dental floss, strung high above South Africa’s sharpest cliffs…

No, this isn’t a metaphor for surviving 2024. It’s Tim Slab’s average Tuesday.

Slackliner Tim is doing things most of us wouldn’t attempt in our wildest dreams or nightmares. Take a look: His YouTube video, Leash Up the Dragon, is a jaw-dropping feat of balance, guts, and a touch of madness. Watch it… We dare you.

Son of theatre legend Paul Slaboleszy, Tim’s taking drama to new heights (pun intended). And who knows? You might see him sooner than you think (hint, hint).

By the way
